I went to the midnight showing of the new Harry Potter movie last night. Or I should say this morning. NEVER AGAIN will I go to a midnight showing of anything.
I say that with a tinge of sadness...it's tradition in our house to go to every midnight book party and movie premier for the Harry Potter series. But last night was enough to break tradition.
I hadn't been super eager to go in the first place, but my little brother wanted me to go with him SO BADLY that I couldn't tell him no. So I got started rereading the book early yesterday morning, intent on finishing it before the movie started. Unfortunately I didn't have the entire day to devote to reading so I was about two-hundred pages short when my dad picked me up for the movie. We got there all early so my brother could see the activities that they had going on, which consisted of a bunch of people selling stupid shit. Don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter, obviously, and I have a collection from when I first started getting into the books; but this stuff was really, shit. So, not only did we get there early for nothing, but we were completely surrounded by idiots. Now, I sort of understand the whole dressing up deal; I mean I did it the first time there was a midnight showing, but COME ON. I was also only like twelve. Last night I was wearing a black tank top and jeans and only because my kid brother talked me into it (he was SO excited that he was letting me borrow it, that I couldn't refuse) I also had on a Gryffindor scarf.
There were people older than me dressed to the nines trying to look like wizards, and not even doing a good job of it. On top of their terrible dress was their almost unbearable behavior. People screaming all over the place and jumping up on each other and bulldozing people over so they can get to the wand booth! It was ridiculous. And then we were in our theater. You'd think that even though these people were acting like complete idiots, they would at least show a bit of courtesy once they were seated. No such luck. They were so loud, talking about their costumes, and what the movie was going to be like, and one large group even started singing Happy Birthday to someone right as the previews started showing. I don't know about you, but I happen to like watching the previews. I don't like people singing and talking at the top of their voices while I'm trying to watch Robert Downing Jr. on screen as a sexy Sherlock Holmes. (A movie that I'll have to see by the way) They were just rude. And when finally, the movie started, the whole theater erupted into applause and shouting and cat-calling. This, I think, aggrivated me the most out of anything. I wanted desperately to scream, YOU DON'T HAVE TO CLAP IN A MOVIE YOU IMPOSSIBLE GITS! THEY CAN'T HEAR YOU! IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED, IT'S JUST A SCREEN!
Is that insensitive of me? I know how exciting it can be when your FAVORITE movie comes out, but honestly, common sense people. And courtesy. By the time the movie was over I was severly annoyed. What with our theater, and the fact that the movie was nowhere close to as good as the book, and it was three o' clock in the morning and Brent was waiting for me in my bed.
I did have fun sharing the night with my little brother, and he was so happy that I had come with him. But I don't think I can do it again. Next time around, I'll spend my night dressing up for Brent.
